WEEK #27 - Roberta's Baptism! And... Hotboxin

Another week to remember, hope you all like reading these!

Monday: January 20th
Happy happy 20th! It's been a good long time ;) It's so weird hitting my 6 month mark this week, it feels like it's been a year and a half ;) But I love it anyways! Great way to start off a 20th with something like this:
CRAZY STORY: Like..... CRAZY
It was just a simple causal pday for us, we were driving to the post office to go check to see if we had any mail come in. I parked the car and we walked up to the building. As soon as we opened the door and walked in we suddenly realized that someone had HOTBOXED the ENTIRE post office!!!! The whole place REEKED of weed... whether from the employees or the people there we don't know. Inside there was a death trap so we ran back outside, haha! Where else would you have a hotboxed post office?! #OnlyInRita
Also, someone just decked a deer, wrecked their car, and left everything. So there's just a dead, mangled deer and a crushed, broken car just chillin on the side on the road outside on the main road...... NICE. :)
Dead Deer, Dead Car... What?

We had a great lesson with Roberta! SHE'S COMMITTED! Woooo! She's ready for her interview and so ready for her baptism. I'm very proud of hoe much she's progressed in the Gospel over these past 5 months. :)

Tuesday: January 21st
Today District Council was very productive, I got very bold with everyone and we had some intense roleplays. Imma miss my District if I get transferred. After we went on exchanges and this time I went to Cimarron!! So I had to say goodbye to Rita for a bit and give the keys to Elder Garstin... uh-oh... I got to stay with Elder Thygerson! Last exchange I did with just him was 3 months ago. We were biking and it was pretty cold. It started to fog a bunch and snow. We ran into someone who was, in the past, trying to deceive missionaries by setting up lunch with them so he could tear into their testimonies. Many spiritual alerts went off and we got out of there quick! I also got to sleep in a bed! What?! It's been three months since that's happened, haha, dang Gina :)
Me and Elder Thygerson

Wednesday: January 22nd
Today was REALLY cold, especially cause I forgot my gloves so my hands were at a 29% function rate, haha ;) Today was very crazy. We met this lady who went on and on to us about how she and her husband were married on July 20th. She was super nice and made us lunch baggies to take with us! She isn't a member and wasn't really too interested, but she said she loves letting the missionaries stop by.
CRAZY STORY:
We were biking around and saw this man smoking a cigarette just sitting outside on the wet curb. We started talking with him and he started speaking really really fast about the cold and the different states he's lived in. So I asked him what he thought the 3 coldest states were and he said, "Alaska, New York, Chicago, New York, and Denver" Uhhhh..... Ok... Haha! ;)

WEIRDEST Rejection Story:
So Elder Thygerson and I knocked on this Mexican guy's house named Pocko. He was someone who told us to come back later in the evening so when we did he answered the door and seemed to be surprised we actually came back, haha! He asked us, "Do you need someone to talk to?" We answered, "Yes!" excitedly. He then said, "I'll find you someone to talk to." And then he shut the door while were waiting and he NEVER came back! Haha, what an odd way to reject a missionary... :)

So close. I went to Cortez all the time growing up

Thursday: January 23rd
We reexchanged and decided today was the day to adventure into the unknown... we drove up to Telluride!

 Mountain Village! Elev. 10,450

Telluride! Elev. 8750

We were able to find a really cool guy named Alberto who was interested in the Book of Mormon. He was willing to meet with us again and we were just amazed. We found an interested person... in Telluride!!! :) There was a few people who when they saw us ran away from us, haha! So weird... ;) Roberta passed her baptismal interview so easily! It was great to have the Zone leaders come down and talk with such a wonderful lady as her. Super good day.

Friday: January 24th
Did some planning and service. We decided to go knock some doors and found some pretty crazy people. We found out the Norse God guy we met last week had sacrificed his pet sheep to his gods... RIP Shaun the Sheep... we also met this guy who wasn't interested because he claimed he was a "gray jedi" haha! I guess I can now say I've met a jedi now. We at least have a few potential people we can start teaching :)

Saturday: January 25th, Roberta's Baptism!
Roberta's Baptism!!

At 10:30am we all gathered in a small group of 10 people for Roberta's baptism. She got dressed in her white jumpsuit and I was in my white clothes again! The whole baptismal service was just amazing. Even if it was small, we are all close knit and love Roberta. Roberta had me baptize her. The water was super warm and she was just smiling so wide once she came up and out of the water! I asked how she felt afterwards and she said, "I feel wet. Haha, I feel great!" What another joy filled occasion where we get to witness another wonderful person come closer to the Savior as they accept His Gospel into their life. Roberta's testimony is SOOO solid! Unfortunately, directly after the baptism I got really sick! Are you kidding me? I think Satan was just mad at me haha. I was really hurting so I took some zquill, a quick nap, but stubbornly enough I still went out and we taught a few lessons and had a dinner with some members. Today was such a great day, and it was so worth every sacrifice.

Sunday: January 26th
Today at church Roberta got confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! (Don't think I'm stating the full name just to be annoying haha) It was amazing to see Roberta receive the true comfort of the Holy Ghost. She gave us all hugs afterwards :) The look on the people's faces in the Branch were priceless! Roberta's baptism was kept low profile and so many member were so shocked to see we got two people baptized in two weeks, haha. In total, we've had OVER 30 lessons with Roberta, we've been teaching her for 5 months and 8 days, plus she's read over 130 chapters of scripture ALL in order for her to gain a testimony that this is the true Gospel. :) What a wonderful experience to have been with her this whole time, she's been able to find such peace and joy in her life that she hasn't had in a long time.

Great, amazing, and memorable week again! I hope you all enjoy learning more about what crazy and cool stuff goes on in missions :)

Love you all,

WEEK #26 - Pam's Baptism! And... Bambi

This week was definitely one to remember! Hope you all can take heart in my joy and in the joy of others who are blessed through the Gospel :)

Monday: January 13th
Today got to talk with my crazy fam. Who would be crazy enough to want be a LaRose? ;) Haha, I am! We went by that same grandpa old guy who answered the door in his straight underwear and taught him the Plan of Salvation. He's a member, but let's just say I'm scared to turn 96 years old... haha!
Wanna wrestle anyone?

Tuesday: January 14th
I conducted the combined district council. The whole zone was there, we had great trainings on member work and finding new people to teach. It's awesome cause Pam who is getting baptized was found by knocking on doors and Roberta who will be baptized on the 25th was the very first person I talked to out on the streets of Nucla! We got to go on exchanges, I stayed in Naturita with Elder Garstin and we got Elder Jensen! He is a hilarious Zone leader. We had a great lesson with Pam who literally says AMEN to everything we teach her so we get stuck because we don't have any follow up questions, haha. I love Pam and am very excited for her!
CRAZY STORY:
You gotta have your eyes constantly scanning the roads here in Rita cause you have no clue what the HECK is going to jump out at you! It could be a deer, another car, or some drunk high guy who needs to stumble across the street to the "Green Room" ;) But this time I almost hit a tiny Bambi deer that ran across the road, good thing I slowed down in time or else we would have had a free dinner... I'm kidding, I'm kidding! ;)

Wednesday: January 15th
We had a mission leadership call which is basically two hours of President Rees roasting us. I like it, it's fun. After we did some service and had dinner in Norwood.
CRAZY STORY:
Guess what?! Guess what I had for dinner?! I had PICKLED DEER HEART. Oh my flippin gosh... that's probably the weirdest thing I've eaten on my mission so far. It wasn't bad but I think it was about 3 years old so that didn't help, haha!
We had Pam's baptismal interview and it took 50 minutes! Mainly because she loves to tell lots of stories. :) But she passed and is SOOO ready to be baptized on Saturday!

Thursday: January 16th
We talked with Dan who struggles with some things. He got really angry at me and exclaimed, "Why can't you guys accept me for who I am? God does!" Well, I told him that God actually doesn't accept us for who we are. That's why He asks us to change, to be better, and to work towards becoming a better disciple in His Gospel. He doesn't want us to become causal or lazy in our discipleship so He's NOT going to accept us for who we are if we aren't willing to change and become better! Dan got really quite after that and humbly thanked us. He appreciates our concern for him but he'll probably have to push his baptismal date back. We reexchanged in Ridegway, completing a 50 hour long exchange! Normally they are 24 hours but we had a ton going on. We had a lesson with Roberta. She was nice and fed us dinner before hand. We got her to commit to coming to church and she wrote in her baptismal date on her calendar! 10:30am on the 25th! :) Just seeing how much Roberta has progressed has filled me with such joy. It really brings truth to the scripture in DC 18:15-16!

Friday: January 17th
CRAZY STORY:
We got caught in a GIANT blizzard! Dang Gina, that made driving fun and scary! We were driving and a storm just rushed through unexpectedly. Most of the area got nailed pretty hard but everything is good. We didn't die. Probably.
Today we started timing how long it takes for me to get in and out the dirt driveway to see what the fastest time was... you know... it's an Elders thing when you're in the middle of the desert and have a half a mile long dirt driveway, haha! ;)
Dressed in white! :)

Saturday: January 18th, Pam's Baptism!
Nervous day but everything turned out great! Pam showed up 20 minutes late and I was sooooo nervous, but we both got dressed in white and got some pictures. Elder Garstin gave a talk on baptism then we proceeded with the ordinance. The water was warm and Pam was nervous yet excited! Pam had me baptize her. She went completely under and when she came up such a cool feeling of peace from the Holy Spirit ran over us as she was baptized. What pure JOY comes to me as I got to help Pam start on her path back to her Heavenly Father! She was overjoyed at the support the branch gave. Our mission President and his wife were there too. They drove 7 hours from Denver to get here! Elder Hibbits gave the talk on the Holy Ghost and we concluded. Pam was so happy :)
What a great day overall to see the first person to be baptized from Naturita in 2020!

The three crazy missionaries... with Pam!

Pam's baptism, with the Mission President!

Sunday: January 19th
Church was awesome! We had the special opportunity to confirm Pam a member of the Church. The significance of this means she now receives the Holy Ghost, through proper priesthood authority, to lead, guide, and direct her throughout the rest of her life! Pam gaves us all big hugs, she is such a wonderful addition to this little Branch!!! :) ALSO, Roberta came to church again!! She sat by Sister Redd and really enjoyed the talks. They focused on the powerful role of women in the Gospel, and on the vital importance of the sacrament. Two very powerful and applicable topics for Roberta! I'm soooo excited to finish this next week off with baptizing and confirming her a member of this wonderful church too. She's been so blessed throughout her studies of the Gospel! :)

This is a week never to be forgotten! Many new beginnings came about in this week. I hope you all had a wonderful week and continue to see the Lord's hand in your life :)

Love,
Elder LaRose

WEEK #25 - "I'm not writing that quote down"

CRAY to the Z this week! Hope you enjoy this, my mission has been such a blessing since being out. Please know that I love you all! <3

Don't mind this... :)

Monday: January 6th
Drove up to Montrose for Zone Conference. We had car inspections and the only thing we could afford was a hand car wash so we did that outside in 10⁰ weather. Our hands were FROZEN, we fumbling trying to put those 7 quarters in the slot to get more time haha :) We had an amazing lesson with Roberta! She's really struggled in her life and thanked us for bringing her the Gospel at a hard time in her life. She just wants peace. Isn't that what we all want? Peace within our families, peace within our friends and loved ones... Christ is the Prince on Peace! So ANY thing, relationship, place, or person built upon the Rock of Christ is promised to have Peace therein. Isn't that wonderful? In time, it truly can be.
Roberta also committed to January 25th as her day she gets baptized! She's still a little nervous but willing to keep praying about this decision in her life. I love Roberta, she's so awesome!

My stash

Tuesday: January 7th
Today was our moved pday, we went round Rita and Nucla and visited a bunch of run down antique shops. Great day talking with family and friends, some were confused about the switched pday, haha! Sorry! We went by the ALLSTAR of the week Pam! She was very honest and open with us. She's had many struggles in her life too. We taught her the rest of everything she needs to know and gave her the baptismal interview! She is super solid, she wants so badly to be baptized and accept the Gospel fully into her life by making this step :)

Wednesday: January 8th
To sum up this day, on lesson about missionary work is that the efforts of Satan against those you teach are REAL. Satan KNOWS when people are starting to accept the Gospel because his grip on them is loosening. He doesn't want any of us to find peace, happiness, joy, or even progression. He wants us to have misery, sorrow, despair, and digression. Never give up on people, always trust in the Lord! I say all this because we had a close call, but everything was resolved through a bunch of hugs, consolation, and a blessing. Missionary work sure is crazy!
Awesome!

Thursday: January 9th
Today I got to hack at a tree with an axe until it fell, haha! We were splitting and gathering wood for a local member. He had a chainsaw, but just the smell of cutting wood brought back fun memories of doing this in Cello with my family on Blue Mountain.
That's a SAVAGE right there

We went by Shane and taught him the Plan of Salvation. He recently had his father passed away, so I was able to have a heart to heart with him. Death in any family is hard. It's confusing. It's very saddening and it hurts you to your core. But the Plan of Salvation brings us hope! We know that our lives do not end at death, my amazing uncle passed away last April from unexpected cancer. That was very hard and still is hard for all of my family to deal with. But I know that he is in a better place, watching over us and imploring us to LIVE so that we can see him again! Shane really liked the hope this brought him about his dad.

Friday: January 10th
Today was a lot of planning. We gave a blessing to an amazing grandma who is struggling with some health issues. The cool thing was her less active daughter showed up at the same time as us and was going to suggest to her mom that she call the missionaries to come over to give her mom a blessing. Well, the Lord certainly directs His work! We had another great lesson with Roberta. Only two weeks until her baptism! We emphasized the scriptures 1 Nephi 22 and talked about how the righteous need not fear so long as they put their trust in God and cast aside all their fears! (Alma 7:15)

Photo cred: The Sun

Saturday: January 11th
Today we taught Dan the Law of Chastity. I'll leave it at that. :) We went by Matt to invite him to church but he just straight up pulled out his WEED BONG in front of us and started smoking it, haha! So what did we do? We served him... by helping him cut wood while he used a CHAINSAW while he was HIGH! #OnlyInRita Next we drove to Norwood, talked with a few people, hit a few icicles down, and then drove back to Rita for Pam's lesson, haha!

We watched the hour long Restoration video with her, she was very grateful for Joseph Smith and was crying at how much he went through to bring about this glorious Gospel. I too can't even imagine the hardship Joseph and especially Emma, his wife, had to face together and when they were apart. Definitely wouldn't be where I am today without them.

Rainbow moon!

Sunday: January 12th
They announced Pam's baptism in church!! It'll be on Saturday the 18th at 4pm. I don't know why yall need to know that, but just in case any of you happen to find yourself in the middle of a barren desert next to a trailer home then... you found me, haha! ;) Don't know how many of yall will be this far south in ColoRADo but you're all invited nonetheless :) We got a new branch presidency and Josh Zitting is the new President! He is a great guy, we now have KJ as our Branch mission leader (helps organize missionary work in the area).

ALOT of driving this week. I've been driving for the past 5 months... haha, I love long drives though. Hope everyone reading this had a great week!

With much love,

WEEK #24 - 2020 Already? Dang Gina! :)

Happy New Years!! Can't believe it's already the year 2020. Lot of crazy adventures ahead! Also added some funny quotes from this week to the end of this email... :)

Monday: December 30th
Great day today! Got to facetime my wonderful family. Buncha savages... Today it got pretty cold, it made me want to take a vacation to Hawaii or something haha! ;) Despite the cold, we had a great lesson with Roberta. For all of our lessons combined she has so far read over 80 chapters of scripture!! That's very impressive seeing how NO ONE usually reads that much when we teach them. We got Roberta to set a goal to tell her family about her decision to accept the Gospel and be baptized. We are excited to see her continue to progress in coming closer to Christ!
No questions asked... ;)

Tuesday: December 31st
Drove up to Montrose, the snow on Dallas is wicked cool. District Council was great, we combined with Elder Jorgenson who trained on patience.... something I need a lot of each day, haha ;) We weren't able to meet with someone for a lesson because they texted us saying, "Can't see you today. We're getting evicted" WHAT! Oh my gosh, that's so bad. We are trying to help them now move into a different trailer #OnlyInRita. We had a lesson with Pam where we outlined all the commandments the Lord has asked us to follow before getting baptized. She took them all really well and she agreed to throw away everything in her house that was breaking the Word of Wisdom in the trash RIGHT THEN! It was such a wonderful moment to see her willing to sacrifice these things in order to be more ready and worthy to be baptized!

I felt like I should add this. Please know that you are never too far away from God. No matter what challenges you face, the trials you endure, or hardships you must brave, our Savior is ALWAYS walking next to you! He leads you as you let Him, He guides you as you accept it, and He comforts you as you are weary. Don't give up! I know the Savior lives and loves YOU. We must walk with the Savior, hand in hand, and accept His loving guidance if we are ever going to make it! Keep pressing forward, and in time, ALL things will work out according to our faith, patience, and trust in Him! <3

Wednesday: January 1st, 2020!!
Happy New Years! Today we had a pretty normal day. We contacted, did some service, and had a member dinner. BUT, what better way to start off 2020 than with not one, but TWO crazy stories!?!
CRAZY STORY:
We were headin to Redvale from Rita and there's a huge cliff alongside a bend in the road. We head around the corner only to all of a sudden slam on our breaks!! There were about 150 COWS marching to the hill coming right towards us! We had to wait 30 minutes for the cows to clear around us so we could continue down the road. Where else would you find just a herd of cows on the highway road? #OnlyInRita
Cows in the Road!!

CRAZY STORY:
We were driving to Rita at night to finish up and  we look over and see a bunch of smoke in the middle of town. We drive closer and realize that a WHOLE TRAILER was on fire!!! And guess what? It was the SAME trailer that I've knocked on a few times only a couple weeks previous. What. The. Heck. Haha! Everyone was fine, but holy cow, what the is happening out here in Rita?! Dang Gina :)

Thursday: January 2nd
Well, today did NOT go as we planned, haha! We had another doctors visit for Elder Garstin this time. He's alright! We went by someone's trailer home and found out that they hadn't been home for a week. We called them and they had us go in to check it out.... it was awful. There was trash strewn everywhere, dishes piled up, old food rotting, dogs hadn't been fed, and the stove was left on for over a week!! Wow. Sad to see how people live in such conditions. We drove to Norwood to finish out the day.
This... this is Rita!!! :)

Friday: January 3rd
We went running today in 10⁰! My companions said I was insane, haha. :) During the days we were knocking on doors and ran into one guy who only believed in "the Pagan Gods" and another guy who believes in the Norse Gods of Old like Thor, Odin, and Loki. We definitely got some interesting people over here in Nucla! I also almost got attacked by a dog in Redvale, I saw a black figure just sprinting towards me and I dove into the car screaming, "Get in the car!!!" and us three bolted back in and sped off tires screechin, haha! :)

Saturday: January 4th
Woke up this morning and was making some breakfast only to hear Elder Hibbits start screaming. I look over and there was a GREASE FIRE in one of our stoves! DONT WORRY. We didn't die :) We put it out rather quickly but burnt one of our pans we smothered the fire with, haha! We went over to Pam's house and cleaned her entire car. It was pretty nasty, but we had a good time. We taught her the Plan of Salvation and Pam was super excited to continue to learn more in the Gospel! She wants so badly to get baptized and can't wait for the 18th. I'm full of such joy seeing her receive blessings and strength for making this commitment. I know being a member of this Gospel has blessed me immensely in my life, why wouldn't I want that for everyone else?! Finished the night watching some Book of Mormon videos with Roberta. She really likes them and seems to love hanging out with us three missionary weirdos :)
Oh no Elder Hibbits

Sunday: January 5th
Pam came to church again! She really enjoyed it and we had a great conversation with her. She is excited to keep connecting with so many members she already knows. Pam also asked ME to baptize her! What a special and unique privilege, I'm beyond excited to see her be blessed for the sacrifices she's made before her baptism as well as the many she will receive after!
FUNNY STORY:
We were in Redvale and decided to drop by a really old member of the branch. He is 96 years old! We knocked on his door and he answered it flat out in his UNDERWEAR. It was soooooo weird, haha! I guess people get like that when they get old. Looks like my parents got something to look forward to in the future, haha!

Some funny quotes from this week:
- "You're drinking weed right now. That's a weed-cicle!" (Elder LaRose)
- "The only way to fight a rattlesnake is with full chainmail and a double handed sword" (Elder Garstin)
- "Sweetness, I have high blood pressure now!" (Elder Hibbits)
- "I live with a bunch of prime-apes..." (Elder LaRose)

That it is indeed... hope yall had a wonderful week! Feel free to email me any updates or questions :)

Love,
Elder LaRose
